I’m Kristin Link, a science illustrator, field artist, and writer based in Alaska. My work combines careful observation, scientific accuracy, and drawing from life to communicate the complexity and beauty of the natural world.
My book, Discover the Art of Field Sketching, is available to preorder.
My book
Discover the Art of Field Sketching
Timber Press, April 2026
A practical guide to observing and sketching nature in the field. Through step-by-step techniques, exercises, and examples from my own sketchbooks, this book demonstrates how field sketching strengthens observation skills and deepens connection to place.
Illustration
With a graduate degree in science illustration, I create accurate, observation-based artwork for educational materials, editorial publications, interpretive signage, and museum exhibitions. My illustrations translate scientific research into clear, engaging visual narratives.
Fine Art
My fine art practice explores northern landscapes shaped by ice, light, and seasonal change. Working across drawing, cyanotype, and mixed media, I examine how glaciers and ecological systems shift over time.
I collaborate with researchers and land managers and exhibit in nonprofit galleries and museums. I have participated in artist residencies at field stations and aboard research vessels and received two Individual Artist Awards from the Rasmuson Foundation.
Nature Journal
A seasonal collection of nature journal pages created in Interior Alaska and published weekly in the Copper River Record. These pen-and-watercolor sketches combine scientific accuracy with the immediacy of field observation, documenting plants, wildlife, and changing landscapes throughout the year.
Teaching
I design workshops, school residencies, and online classes that use field sketching as a tool for observation and place-based learning. My teaching experience includes K–12 classrooms through the Alaska Artist in Schools program, community mural projects, college-level field courses, and residential workshops for adults and educators.
